SIERAAD Art Fair 2013: International Jewellery Design Fair

This November saw my first showcase at the International Design Fair ‘SIERAAD’, in Amsterdam.

It begins!…

My journey started off in the rain with a heavy suitcase after arriving in the dark. I hopped on a bus that I had decided looked like it stopped as close to where I needed to be on my soggy, paper map, before realising I had forgotten to change any of my Euros in to small change- so a huge thank you to the bus driver who let me on for free!

After dragging my suitcase and sodden shoes up & down across the main street in WesterGasfabriek, I was finally directed in the right direction by a kind stranger, and alas! I arrived at the Gashouder for SIERAAD just in time to set up my stand.

Side note: I laughed hard in the morning when I arrived back on the same road and saw the enormous venue staring me in the face over the canal- this I couldn’t see in the dark at all, so I had proceeded to walk up & down the road unknowingly!

The next few days saw the show in full swing, meeting visitors from across Europe, including France, Italy, Spain and of course, the Netherlands.

Sieraad offered so many beautiful & diverse showcases from Designers across the globe, but sadly I didn’t have the chance to explore them all! I met some amazing stand neighbours including Grace Hamilton, fellow JeDeCo designer Farah Qureshi, and visiting designer Robyn Galway, as well as catching up with familiar faces including Isabelle Busnel, Paulo Ribeiro from JOYA Barcelona and Eliana Negroni from Milan.

Some of my popular pieces proved to be the split panel rings among both men and women- both with and without stones; the double cube drop earrings; the linked boxes necklace and my geometric ‘kite’ collection:

A fantastic, inspiring start to the winter season, and I look forward to developing new work over the coming months, ready for next year!

I was also lucky enough to visit the Van Gogh museum on Friday night. In November, there is live music and drinks in the foyer until 10pm. I was amazing being able to walk around the musuem, all the way to the top, and still hear the music paying, carrying you away whilst you explore the various exhibitions. I love the way the museum was set out, showing you the various influences within his work and watching these develop through every room 🙂 Here are some of my highlights:

– But now for Christmas orders! 🙂

Stephanie Bates qualified from the prestigious Birmingham School of Jewellery and Design and takes her inspiration from areas undergoing Regeneration, such as Gloucester Docks and Birmingham’s Jewellery

Quarter. Urban buildings including old, graffitied warehouses in Digbeth, blocks of flats in Perry Barr under demolition expose their history, and the newly built, angular steel structures alongside these have offered interesting contrasts to use as a creative base. Working in a range of materials from precious metals and stones, concrete, wallpaper and enamel paint, Stephanie combines these with both traditional skills and modern design technology to create her bold jewellery.

After joining Jewellery Designers’ collective ‘JeDeCo’, in early 2012, they opened their first collaborative showroom in London’s OXO Tower, which officially marked the launch of Stephanie’s Jewellery brand.

Stephanie Bates said of her work, “‘Changes in state’ is my current collection of wearable pieces that have been inspired by architecture and its constant change through destruction and development over the years. It has been an exciting year since opening our JeDeCo OXO Tower showroom and launching my collection, exhibiting at both the Contemporary Craft Fair in Devon and JOYA in Barcelona last year. I am currently getting ready to exhibit my work for a 2nd time at JOYA this October, shortly followed by SIERAAD fair in Amsterdam during November, both of which I’m really looking forward to!’.

JOYA – the Barcelona Contemporary Jewellery Fair is the main international contemporary jewellery event in Spain. In its fifth edition, JOYA joins different entities and associations related to signature jewellery bringing a unique opportunity for students, new designers and established creators to exhibit and sell their collections. JOYA is organized by Paulo Ribeiro and Anthony Chevallier (Le Département) and curated by Piotr Rybaczek (La Basílica Galería), Petra Marín (Grupo Duplex), Ricardo Domingo (JORGC) and the contemporary artist Florence Croisier, whose work features this year’s edition of the fair. JOYA is a local and international exhibition opened for both professionals working on contemporary jewellery and also the general public.

In its fifth edition, JOYA – Barcelona Contemporary Jewellery Fair is the main international contemporary jewellery event in Spain. It will be held at FAD, Plaza dels Angels, and is open to the public between from 17- 19th October.

Upcoming exhibition: SIERAAD 2013

I am pleased to announce that this year I will be exhibiting at SIERAAD in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
